Garhwa: A herd of elephants trampled a woman from particularly vulnerable tribal group (PVTG) to death at Chirka village under in Garhwa district late on Thursday night. The body of the deceased was recovered on Friday morning and was sent to Garhwa sadar hospital for post-mortem, police said.
The deceased was identified as Geeta Devi (50). Her husband, Prabhu Korwa, said that he and his wife were sleeping in the house when the herd attacked the house at midnight. He said that he somehow managed to escape, but his wife could not hear him call her and was trampled to death by the jumbos.
Forester Animesh Kumar paid Rs 50,000 to the kin of the deceased as partial compensation. DFO Garhwa (south division) Ebin Benny Abraham said, “A partial payment of Rs 50,000 has been given to the deceased kin and the rest of the amount of compensation Rs 3.5 lakh will be paid soon,” the DFO said, adding that the villagers have been advised to stay alert.
